Today, we celebrate our fathers and father-like figures in our lives who provided guidance, strength, support, and love. For most, this
day is marked with cards and gifts of ties. For a few, this day takes on an extra-special meaning. For these individuals, the thought of celebrating another Father's Day seemed far out of reach. They needed a miracle to be able to both celebrate and be celebrated.
Rob Newton [right] received his diagnosis of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) before thoughts of Eliza, his daughter, ever crossed his mind. Now, after the life-saving gift of a kidney transplant in 2010, Rob has the energy to keep up with his new family, whether on foot or on two-wheels!
Jerry Smigelski, Jr. and his dad have many things in common, like most parents and their children. However, one of their connections is more unusual than most: both men are heart transplant recipients. Jerry's father had a heart transplant 15 years ago at the University of Michigan. Jerry followed suit, receiving his new heart at Duke University Hospital on October 4, 2010. On Father's Day, Jerry can celebrate with his two sons, Aaron and Matthew,] and also celebrate his own father's second chance at life.
